Construction staking and layout from your approved plans.

Scale and Key Surveying stakes site improvements from the approved plan set, sets and verifies site control, checks grades and measures as-built conditions. Scope, fee and field date are confirmed before work is booked.

Seth Kursel, PLS, Idaho Professional Land Surveyor 1181318, reviews the plans, is responsible for the layout and is your point of contact. Look up license 1181318 on the Idaho public license search.

01 / DELIVERABLES

What you get.

  • Stakes and hubs at your offset, each marked with feature, station or point number, offset and cut or fill
  • A cut sheet for each staking visit: point, description, design grade, staked elevation, cut or fill
  • A staked points exhibit showing what was set and the plan revision it came from
  • Site control and benchmarks set or verified against the design survey, with a control sheet
  • Grade checks: measured elevation against plan elevation
  • As-built measurements as a point file and drawing
02 / INPUTS

What to send.

  • The approved plan set as PDF, with revision dates, addenda and field changes
  • The engineer's CAD files, with alignments and surfaces if released
  • The design survey's control: coordinate system, vertical datum, benchmark and control points
  • What needs staking first and the order of work
  • Your preferred offset distance and side for each element
  • Site address, on-site contact, access and working hours

What gets staked

You set the offset. We mark what it refers to.

Unless you ask otherwise:

  • Curb and gutter: back of curb, cut or fill to top back of curb. Returns get a hub and tack at the radius point.
  • Sidewalk: back of walk or the edge you name, cut or fill to top of walk at that edge. Valley gutter: centerline at finish grade. Ramps at the ramp centerline on back of curb, driveway aprons at the top of each flare.
  • Manholes: center of structure, cut or fill to inverts in and out. Valve pits and lift stations: center, cut or fill to floor. Catch basins at centerline on back of curb.
  • Sewer pipe: centerline, cut or fill to invert. Water: centerline, cut or fill to top or bottom of pipe.
  • Grading: stakes marked C or F to subgrade, top of gravel or finish grade, in decimal feet. Slope stakes carry cut or fill, distance and slope ratio.
  • Buildings: corners on offsets or wall lines, with a finish floor benchmark.

How it works

From plan set to cut sheet.

  1. 1. Send the plans.

We reply with scope, fee basis and proposed field dates.

  2. 2. Calculations.

Points are computed from the CAD and checked against the approved sheets before the visit.

  3. 3. Control, then stakes.

Control, including control set by others, is checked before anything is staked.

  4. 4. Cut sheet.

You receive the cut sheet and staked points exhibit, with any conflicts noted.

Fee and schedule

What drives the fee and the schedule.

  • Number of points and separate visits
  • Whether usable CAD and survey control already exist
  • Missing dimensions and unresolved plan revisions
  • Access, traffic, active equipment, terrain and sky visibility
  • Travel distance from Boise
  • Notice given, and restaking of stakes lost to construction

The fee basis is stated in the proposal before work is authorized.

Superintendent questions

Direct answers.

How much notice do you need?

The first visit needs time for plan review and calculations, so send plans when the job is awarded. A field date is confirmed after we review scope and current commitments. On short notice, call 208-279-1596.

What happens when our schedule changes?

Call as soon as you know. We reschedule to the next date open on both calendars. If the site is not ready when we arrive, we stake what can be staked and schedule a return visit.

What if the plans do not match what is in the field?

We hold the affected stakes, keep staking the rest, and do not redesign in the field. You and the engineer of record get measured positions, photos and the sheet in question. If the CAD disagrees with the approved PDF set, we stake from the approved set unless the engineer directs otherwise, and report the difference. Held staking resumes on the engineer's direction.

Who replaces stakes that get knocked out?

We restake on request, as additional work under the agreed fee basis.

Where do you work?

Ada and Canyon counties (Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Star, Kuna, Nampa, Caldwell) and Blaine County (Hailey, Ketchum, Sun Valley, Bellevue). We travel a few hours from Boise for the right project.
